The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the recent killings and disturbances between supporters of the party and National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth in Tamale should be treated as a criminal matter.

Residents and security analysts monitoring the situation in the Northern Region have accused the two parties of fanning the tensions between the youth groups there.

In an interview with Citi News, the NPP national chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey said the recent development ?reinforces our continuing calls to the Police Service that they must be absolutely blind in dealing with these matters? They cannot turn round and say maybe it?s the NDC boys attacking the NPP and therefore they cannot deal with it.?

He was of the opinion that the police could have prevented the situation if it had been proactive.

He encouraged the relevant stakeholders ?to work towards making sure that we don?t come and unnecessarily introduce politics into a situation that may have to do with just straight forward hooliganism and criminal activity.?

The recent troubles have left two people from each group killed in the Tamale metropolis.
