A Bicycle Repairer, Jamil Osman was on Wednesday sentenced to six years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for causing harm to three persons at Nima in Accra, on January 6.


Jamil who was arraigned for robbery and causing harm to Abdul Nasiru Abubakar, Frant Tetteh Quaye and Sumaila Amisu, pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery but guilty to the charges of causing harm.

He however explained to the Court that it was not his intention to harm them, but he was under the influence of alcohol and the three attempted to prevent him (convict) from entering his mother’s room, adding that he only saw the phone on the floor and picked it.


The Court presided over by Mrs Abena Adjin Doku Oppong sentencing said Jamil was convicted on his own plea taking into consideration his explanation.

She sentenced him to 24 months imprisonment each on all three counts of causing harm. The sentences are to run consecutively. He is also to pay an amount of GH₡ 500.00 to all three victims.

On the charge of robbery which Jamil pleaded not guilty, the Court has adjourned trial to January 31.

Prosecuting, Superintendent Kweku Bempah, told the Court that the complainant is a 17 year old student of Kokomlemle Two Junior High School, whilst the convict is a bicycle repairer living at Nima, in Accra.

He said on January 6, at about 1900 hours, the complainant was on the veranda in their house cooking with her siblings, when her brother, a witness in the case came from outside the house to inquire whether the convict who was standing at the gate was waiting for her.

He said the complainant answered in the negative and his brother left for the bath house.

Jamil on seeing that the complainant was there alone making a call with her mobile phone, hurriedly entered the house and ordered the complainant to hand over the mobile phone to him.

The prosecution said the complainant refused and Jamil pulled out a jack-knife and threatened to stab her in the chest.

Superintendent Bampah said the complainant out of fear, handed over the Sony mobile phone worth GH₡ 250.00 to the convict and he bolted with same. The complainant raised an alarm which drew the attention of people.

He told the Court that Jamil, used the knife he was holding whilst running to stab anybody who attempted to stop him. He stabbed all three victims inflicting various degrees of injury on them.

Jamil run and sought refuge in his mother’s room when he was chased by the angry mob. He was arrested with the stolen phone in his hand.

The Prosecution said the convict admitted the offense in his caution statement.
