DSS Officer Beaten Black and Blue By Angry Mob In Ekiti

Irate mob suspected to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) yesterday attacked and beat silly an official of the?Directorate of State Security (DSS) in Ado Ekiti.

Daily Times learnt that the trouble started following a disagreement between?the students of the Ekiti State University, (EKSU) and Akoto Drivers over number of passenger on a seat. The students were said to have protested that the drivers reduce the number of passengers on a seat to its normal three from four that they are taking.

The clash between the students and the commercial drivers, also known as Akoto drivers in Ekiti, said to have happened?in Bawa Area of Ado Ekiti, had escalated into a free-for-all and caused traffic gridlock from Bawa to the University area.
Some of drivers were seen carrying clubs, cudgels and sharp objects to scare passengers and motorists plying the road. They were also stopping the motorists conveying students from old garage area to the University and ordering them out of the vehicles.

The situation took a more violent trend as an official of the Directorate of State Security (DSS), simply identified as Courage was allegedly attacked?and beaten silly by some drivers. His clothes were torn to shreds and he had bruises, cuts and blood stains on his body when the reporters met him.

The DSS official said he was attacked on his way to office by some of the drivers who were molesting other motorists. He said though he?introduced himself as an officer of the DSS but instead of giving him a free passage, the angry drivers attacked him and tried to disarm him of his pistol.
He added that but for the timely intervention of his colleague and his firm hold onto his pistol during the beating, the drivers would have disarmed him.

“I was punched, clubbed, stoned by the drivers and if not for the timely intervention of another colleague who fortunately came to the scene and shot in the air severally to scare the mob away, it would have been worse,” he said.

Meanwhile, the students have vowed to ensure that the drivers comply with the regulation of only three people on the seat. They said they would not relent in their effort to see that that is done.

“By this act of destruction, the drivers have?courted trouble and should be ready to face the consequences. We will not relent until they comply with the regulations concerning the proper number of passengers they should carry, “one of the students, simply identified as Deji, said.

On the other hand, one Lamidi, one of the drivers, also?blew hot, saying that they will not go back to the road until there is a concrete agreement between the students and drivers.

He also alleged?that the students were responsible for a trouble the night before when they attacked some Akoto drivers and?beat them to stupor and also damaging their buses.
However, some officials of the DSS, Policemen and some top officials of the?EKSU later visited the scene to restore peace in the area.
