Abdullahi publicly announced his retirement after paying a courtesy farewell visit to the Nigerian leader, Muhammadu Buhari, whom he (the former customs chief) had earlier given a notification of retirement on Aug. 3. His voluntary retirement request was granted by the Nigerian president on Aug. 14.

“I will like to be remembered as father of modern customs in Nigeria,” Abdullahi told reporters in the Nigerian capital Abuja, noting under his watch, the revenue collection into various coffers of government increased drastically.

He served as the Nigerian customs chief for six years, after pursuing vigorously a six-point agenda which he articulated after assuming office on Aug. 18, 2009.

Buhari is yet to announce a replacement for the former customs chief whose position would be vacant from Tuesday. Enditem
