Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, who had served at the Interpol, as new acting Inspector General of Police.

Adamu’s appointment followed the retirement of his predecessor, Ibrahim Idris, on Tuesday after he clocked up the mandatory 35 years in service.

In a short statement, the president’s office confirmed that the acting police chief was decorated by Buhari on Tuesday afternoon.

Adamu was prior to Tuesday’s appointment an Assistant Inspector General of Police. He was enlisted into the Nigeria police force on Feb. 1, 1986.

Upon his appointment, the new police chief faces an arduous task of ensuring effective policing during Nigeria’s general elections next month.

A police statement confirmed that the new security chief has immediately assumed duty. Enditem
