The Nigerian government on Wednesday cautioned politicians in the country against making provocative utterances during their campaign.

Politicians must be mindful of their utterances and guard against provocative statements capable of overheating the polity and precipitating the breakdown of law and order, Garba Abari, the director general of National Orientation Agency said.

He spoke in northeast city of Bauchi at the flag-off of campaign program on peaceful 2019 elections.

This is a time for issues-based campaigns and not for character assassination, fake news and hate speech, he added, noting that democracy has come to stay in the country.

“We must protect it by ensuring that political parties create atmosphere that will increase citizens’ confidence in the process,” he added.

The director general said the agency had been embarking on sensitization campaign on the proper manner that politicians and the electorate should conduct themselves.

Abari told his audience that the sensitization was also designed to encourage the electorate to exercise their franchise without fear or favor. Enditem
