The Nigerian army on Friday claimed to have recaptured Dikwa town in restive northeastern Borno state, once held by suspected Boko Haram militants.

Spokesperson for the Nigerian Airforce, Air Commodore Dele Alonge, said Alpha Jet aircraft destroyed three points of the militants fortified with vehicle-mounted anti-aircraft guns.

The air strike paved way for the troops to move in and retake the town with less resistance, he said, adding that search operations are ongoing.

The Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed thousands of lives, kidnapped hundreds of people and displaced close to half a million in the northeastern part of Nigeria, one of the country’s poorest regions. Enditem
