Nigeria on Friday handed over American military vehicles seized about two months ago to officials of the United States embassy here, after several documents were signed to that effect.

Six mine-resistant and multipurpose military vehicles belonging to America were intercepted by troops manning a checkpoint in the northeastern state of Adamawa since August, saying there was no due process in transporting the vehicles into Nigeria.

It is not immediately clear whether suspects were arrested since it is illegal to import such equipment without an end-user certificate from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the only federal agency with powers to issue such documents in Nigeria.

The vehicles were on their way to neighboring country Niger for a security mission when they were seized by the Nigerian troops, according to the official News Agency of Nigeria.

Kamardeen Olumoh, a comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service in Adamawa, handed over the military vehicles to American embassy officials, saying the directive came from the ONSA to release the seized vehicles.

Upon release, Kathleen FitzGibbon, deputy chief of mission at the embassy of United States of America in Nigeria, said the American air force carrier would transport the vehicles to Niger for the vehicles to complete their mission. Enditem
