The baby boy was conceived from frozen egg of a 44-year old woman said to have suffered infertility for more than eight years.

babyDoctors at The Bridge Clinic in Nigeria’s southwestern city of Lagos, where the baby was delivered on Feb. 16, told the local Vanguard Newspaper the mother had her eggs frozen for two months, using a process called the vitrification, also known as flash-freezing.

Emmanuel Owie, a fertility physician at the clinic, said during such process, eggs are fertilized using a standard technique known as intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to overcome the egg shell which normally gets hardened with freezing.

Egg freezing was usually recommended for women with a family history of early menopause or women diagnosed with cancer, who may lose their fertility during chemotherapy; and women who want to delay child-bearing in order to pursue some personal goals.

Medical expert Dayo Omogbehin said the birth process was very possible but, most times, ice crystals could destroy the cell during egg freezing.

According to the expert, doctors must first dehydrate the egg and replace the water with an “anti-freeze”, prior to freezing in order to prevent ice crystal formation.

“We also learned that because the shell of the egg hardens when frozen, sperm must be injected with a needle to fertilize the egg using a standard technique known as Intra-cytoplasmic Sperm Injection,” he added.

The birth and conception of the egg baby is first ever to be recorded in Nigeria and the entire West African sub-region. Enditem
