The Nigerian police on Thursday said they lost more than 12,000 officers due to retirement, death, dismissal and desertion since 2013.

Chairman of Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, told reporters that despite the reduction, there had not been recruitment of policemen during the period.

He said his request for recruitment had been turned down by the government, adding that social security would be threatened if by 2016 there was still no supplement.

Nigeria with a population of 160 million was far behind the United Nations standard of one police officer to 400 persons, he noted.

Police training schools across the country were in a dilapidated state, he said. Enditem
