This step became necessary to effectively manage current realities in the fight against piracy in Nigeria, Afam Ezekude, Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), said in Abuja, the country’s capital city.
Nigeria map He said the commission, as part of its enforcement and prosecution efforts, currently have over 175 piracy cases in court.

The NCC was established in 1988 by the Copyright Decree No. 47, which now exists as Copyright Act Cap C28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The commission was mandated to advance the growth of the creative industry in Nigeria through the dissemination of copyright knowledge, efficient administration and protection of rights.

Subsequently, the Nigerian Copyright Act was amended twice by the Copyright (Amendment) Decree (No. 98) of 1992 and Copyright (Amendment) Decree (No. 42) of 1999.

Ezekude stressed the need for a review of the Act establishing the commission to properly address current right protection challenges in Nigeria, and global trends.

The director general added that review of the Act will facilitate “Nigeria’s compliance with its international copyright treaty obligations” to keep pace with global trends in information technology that affect copyright contents. Enditem
