Nigeria and Benin Republic on Thursday pledged to work more closely in the coming years to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation. Boni Yayi
President of Benin Boni Yayi and Nigeria’s President-elect Muhammadu Buhari made the remarks at a short meeting in the Nigerian capital Abuja.
“Benin will always support President Buhari and Nigeria. I will make more visits to Nigeria, be close to Buhari as I was close to his predecessor,” the Beninese president told reporters after the meeting.
The visiting president said this was necessary, especially with 55 percent of the total population of Benin come from its western neighbor, Nigeria.
The two countries have enjoyed stable relations for decades. Depending on Nigeria for most of its export, Benin’s economy is primarily based on trade with Nigeria.
President Buhari said he was extremely impressed with Yayi’s speech and visit, particularly for identifying and offering to cooperate with Nigeria to resolve the security challenges which affect commerce and industry.
“Neighborhood is significant to security and economy and our government is ready to work closely with you,” the Nigerian president added. Enditem
