Two weeks after the publication of the wealth of Burkina Faso’s transition government officials, a local NGO involved in the fight against graft, REN- LAC, has expressed doubt on the “sincerity” of some declarations.

“The decision to publish officials’ wealth was a good move. But we wish to express our doubts on the sincerity of the declarations by some government officials,” REN-LAC said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
In conformity with the Transition Charter, the president and other senior government officials declared their wealth on April 13, 2015.
“How can we believe the sincerity of these declarations if there is no mention of the means of transport, or a bank account, a house or even land, yet we know those concerned own these properties,” the anti-corruption NGO posed.
“The wealth of some individuals simply left us stunned,” the statement continued, adding that “being rich is certainly not a crime, but the wealth must be acquired legally.”
REN-LAC further urged the Constitutional Council and the Revenue Court to independently play their role, in order “to remove” any doubts over the sincerity of some declarations. Enditem
