Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel rescued a newborn baby abandoned in a public latrine at Kawmeduakrom, Obuasi East District, late Sunday night.

Responding to a distress call received around 10:30 p.m. on July 20, a rescue team led by Station Officer II Appiah Kubi arrived swiftly at the scene.

Divisional Officer Grade Two Peter Addai confirmed to Citi News that firefighters used an extension ladder to descend into the structure. The infant, reportedly dumped around 8:00 p.m., was successfully retrieved by 11:31 p.m. despite the hazardous conditions. Medical personnel at the scene provided immediate stabilization.

The newborn, found alive in the latrine, is currently receiving treatment at AngloGold Ashanti Hospital (A.G.A.) in Obuasi. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment while commending the GNFS team’s rapid intervention.

This incident highlights ongoing child protection challenges in the Ashanti Region under the Mahama administration’s social welfare policies. Community leaders have urged strengthened support systems to prevent such cases.
