Six records were broken at the second Lagos State Premier Athletics Secondary Schools Championships.

The marks in the high jump (girls), shot put (girls), 100m (girls), 100m (boys), 1,500m (girls) and 1,500m (boys) were all bettered at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on the final day on Saturday.

The two-week event, which has been given a boost by Premier Lotto’s sponsorship, saw athletes from six districts from the Lagos State take part.

Esther Isah from district three cleared a height of 1.45m to set a new record in the girl’s high jump while district two’s Joy Michael threw 9.37m to set a new shot put record.

Other record breakers included Magdalene George, who ran 12.68 in the girls 100m, Sunday Emmanuel (11.50 in boys 100m) and Saka Sanusi (4:13 in the 1,500m for boys).

“The improvement in finishing time was expected as this is championships of zealous youths,” Akin Folarin, an official from the championship told vanguardngr.com.

“Every athlete at this stage wants to make it to the elite stage where more rewards and recognition are accorded.”

The 17-year-old Sanusi, from Eko Akete Senior Secondary School, believes he has a bright future.

“With this feat, the coast is now clear for a promising career in the sport.”
