330e91a97b751e668d6335f877632122Governor Peter Obi has flagged off the screening of sickle cell disease in new born babies at the Teaching Hospital, Amaku??at the weekend.??The facility was installed by the Nigeria New Born Screening initiative in collaboration with the State government.
Governor Obi said his administration would continue to provide every child opportunity to survive and attain full potentials in life. He noted that the Centre would help to reduce the challenges and devastating effects of sickle cell in the society and assured that his administration would give the programme total support as he reinstated that health remained a critical component of the vision of his administration to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Lawrence Ikeakor said many support staff had been trained to ensure effective implementation of the programme.
The coordinator of the initiative, Dr. Victoria Odesina commended Governor Obi for his foresight and commitment to the programme noting that he is the first Governor that has demonstrated such support and would soon become a model for others.
Dr. Odesina, who regretted that five thousand children die every day because of sickle cell anemia, assured that the progamme would prolong life and give succor to those affected as they intend to reach out to people in all parts of the State while the programme would include tasting, tracking, treatment and counseling.
Also speaking, another member of the team, Dr. Joe Ubaike said the instruments could detect all blood related health issues which the programme would provide intervention to prevent complications associated with sickle cell disease.
