A Former Ashanti Regional 1st Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress Alhaji Shani Muhammed Snr, has said the Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, failed the party and its Presidential Candidate, John Mahama in the 2016 presidential elections.

“I must say point blank that Kwesi Amissah-Arthur is to blame for the NDC losing this election,” Alhaji Shani opined.

The December 7 presidential poll saw the worst defeat recorded by a sitting President in Ghana’s election history.

President Mahama became the first incumbent to lose a re-election bid after a first term, as the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, won 53.85% of the total valid votes cast, against his 44.40%.

Alhaji Shani Snr indicated that the Veep was brought into the party in 2012 “as someone who was going to be able to sort out the economic challenges” and also as a counter to the NPP’s Running Mate and economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Ahead of last year’s general elections, Dr. Bawumia present a bleak assessment of Ghana’s economy, during a lecture, where he dared the NDC’s Mr. Amissah-Arthur to answer his 170 questions on the state of the economy.

But Vice President Amissah-Arthur strongly avoided the topic and said two days to the elections that, anyone asking 170 questions was not serious and that most of the questions put forward by Dr. Bawumia were mere statements of fact. He then stated that he has been advised by one of his colleagues at University of Ghana not to respond to any questions put out by the then running mate of the governing party .

But sharing his thought on the current happening in the NDC in an interview on Thursday, Alhaji Shani Snr maintained that the Vice President was expected to have brought some sanity into the NDC’s economic policies and developments but failed totally .

” I can say it for a fact that, Ammisah Arthur’s failure to respond to Dr. Bawumia, cost us this huge defeat” He said.

Adding, “Mr. Amissah Arthur was never a competitor of Dr. Bawumia who happens to be his surbodinate during their days at the Bank of Ghana”.

He further accused Dr. Kwesi Botway of failing to set some records straight after Dr. Bawumia’s countless attacks on the NDC government.

Alhaji Shani therefore called on the party’s hierarchy, as a matter of urgency to dissolve the Dr. Kwesi Botway committee.
