Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary by-election, securing 10,884 votes representing 63 percent of ballots cast to claim the seat in the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

The election, held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, across 113 polling centres in the Greater Accra Region, recorded a low turnout of 16,928 voters out of approximately 50,000 registered voters.

His closest challenger, Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), obtained 4,009 votes representing 23 percent. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda placed third with 1,885 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal People’s Party (LPG) received 43 votes, and independent candidate David Kanor got 104 votes.

The contest was peaceful, with a heavy police deployment maintaining calm throughout the day. Senior figures from both major parties observed the process on the ground. NDC stalwarts including former party chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo, and NDC Director of Elections Tanko Computer were present. From the NPP, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson monitored voting at various polling centres.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of Nasser Toure Mahama, the sitting Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, who passed away in January 2026. Baba Jamal, a former MP for Akwatia Constituency and a former High Commissioner of Ghana to Nigeria, will serve the unexpired term of the late lawmaker.

He is expected to be sworn into Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin at the next sitting of the House.
