A faction of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth in Walewale has issued an ultimatum to President John Mahama, demanding the immediate revocation of two recent government appointments or face mass protests and office lock-ins.

At a charged press conference on Wednesday, the group accused party leadership of sidelining loyal members in favor of outsiders, including an alleged NPP sympathizer. Their grievances center on the appointments of Yidana Asana as West Mamprusi Municipal NADMO coordinator and Abdulai Sadiq as North East Regional YEA accountant.

“The party promised this position to Iddrisu Inusah before the 2024 elections but gave it to an unknown member,” said spokesperson Wasibu Aziz, reading from their statement. The youth claim neither regional nor constituency leadership was consulted about Asana’s appointment, violating internal protocols.

Their fury escalated over Sadiq’s YEA appointment, with the group presenting him as an active NPP polling agent during the last elections. “Appointing an NPP agent mocks our sacrifices,” Aziz stated, threatening to “destroy party properties” if their demands go unheeded.

The protest highlights growing tensions within the NDC’s grassroots over perceived exclusion from the appointment process. Analysts note this mirrors historical patronage challenges in Ghanaian politics, where electoral foot soldiers often clash with central party decision-making. Similar disputes have previously led to violent protests in other constituencies during both NDC and NPP administrations.

With Walewale being a key swing constituency in the North East Region, political observers warn the unrest could undermine party cohesion ahead of future elections. The youth have given no specific timeline for their threatened actions but insist they’ll “not sit aloof” while what they call “injustices” persist.
