The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold parliamentary primaries in Akwatia Constituency on August 4, 2025, following the death of sitting MP Ernest Kumi.

The party confirmed nominations open July 28 and close July 30, with candidate vetting scheduled for July 31.

This contrasts with the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) approach of directly selecting a candidate for the upcoming by-election. The vacancy arose after Kumi, elected in December 2024, passed away six months into his term. The NDC’s accelerated timeline aims to finalize its candidate before campaign activities intensify for the September by-election.

Akwatia remains a historically competitive seat in Ghana’s Eastern Region. The NDC’s primary process underscores its commitment to internal democracy under the Mahama administration’s leadership. Winning this by-election would strengthen the ruling party’s legislative position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The Electoral Commission has yet to announce the official by-election date, though September 2025 is widely anticipated. Security preparations are underway given the constituency’s history of electoral tensions. Observers note the outcome could signal shifting voter sentiments in the Eastern Region.
