Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO and the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has apologized for his recent remarks regarding Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.
In a brief statement released following widespread criticism, NAPO clarified that his comments were personal opinions and were not intended to disparage Kwame Nkrumah or any former president of Ghana.
The controversy arose during his unveiling in Kumasi, where NAPO asserted that no president in Ghana’s history, including Kwame Nkrumah, had outperformed President Akufo-Addo. These remarks sparked significant public backlash and calls for an apology and retraction.
In his statement, NAPO expressed regret over any discomfort caused by his comments: “I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor. I note the concerns raised after my statement; I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused.”
The apology addresses the criticisms and reaffirms respect for Ghana’s historical figures amidst the ongoing political discourse.
