Pollster Ben Ephson suspects that the leadership of the National Democratic Party (NDP) is making frantic efforts to get former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings as its flagbearer in order to avoid public ridicule.

He said the splinter party wanted to scuttle the votes of the ruling National Democratic Congress, which they broke away from, but are somewhat disappointed that former President J.J. Rawlings, whose objectives the party claims to be championing, was yet to hop onto their bandwagon.

?I believe that it has come to a point that it was necessary for something to be done to avoid may be public ridicule or something,? Mr Ephson told Joy News on Monday.

The General Secretary of the NDP, Dr. Joseph Manboa-Rockson earlier today confirmed to Joy News that Mrs Rawlings would likely be endorsed as the party?s flagbearer on Saturday: when the party goes to congress in Kumasi.

Her desire, harboured over a decade, to become Ghana?s president is coming to roost, Mr Ben Ephson, who is also the Editor of the Dispatch newspaper, asserted.

Many have doubted NDP?s impact in the 2012 general elections, they may cause a stir though, but for Mr Ephson, with all their facilities and having duly been certified by the Electoral Commission, he quipped ?If they go and they get one per cent, they won?t be the only party which have got one per cent.?

Whilst the party hopes to make the NDC unpopular and lose power, Ben Ephson observed that if the NDC is ?smart they can turn Nana Konadu?s candidacy as the flagbearer to their advantage.?

He explained that the 3.1% votes she got when she contested the late President Atta Mills for the NDC presidential slot in Sunyani were ?sympathy votes for the husband?.

She had created the impression that the NDC did not respect the former first couple and not treating the husband well as the founder of the party, he recalled.

?If the founder of NDC does not mount the NDP platform at all, we will see her true strength in Ghanaian politics,? he noted.
