MUSLIMS OF Alajo North and Kotobabi in Accra in the Central Ayawaso Constituency celebrated the birth (Maulid) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) at the weekend. The celebration was under the distinguished patronage of the National Chief Imam, Sheik (Dr) Nuhu Sharabutu, ably assisted by Sheik Ali Akweiteman, Chief Imam of Akweiteman Mosque.

The function was under the chairmanship of Retired Chief Inspector Muhammad Alidu also, chairman of the Bassare Welfare Union.

The President, His Excellency John Mahama was represented by Honourable Alhaji Abu-Sadat a.ka. Baba Lamin ? who is the Special Assistant of Muslims and Zongo Affairs to the President.

He was also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya in the first Republic.

The theme of the celebration was ?Unifying The Muslim Youth And Umah For The Challenges Of The 21st Century?.

The celebration or the (Maulid) started at 10:00pm with the recitation of Quranic verses and beautiful songs by Muslim students, while important dignitaries and Muslim scholars already seated, took their turns to preach the life of the last Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) to the gathering.

To start with, Sheik Ali Akweiteman started by explaining his relationship with the National Chief Imam.

He added that he and the National Chief Imam attended the same Islamic school (Madrassa) in the early 50s, and more importantly, they both shared love and unity with each other.

Sheik Ali Akweteman praised the National Chief Iman for his good leadership qualities and added that Sheik Nuhu Sharubutu was God-send to lead Muslims of this country, and should be accorded that respect and support by all and sundry.

In his sermon, His Eminence the National Chief Imam elaborated on the importance of the celebration of Maulid in recent times. He said, ?There is the need to show love for the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) and to follow His ways and tradition.?

He also touched on the importance of knowledge as proclaimed by the Holy Prophet and urged all Muslims to note that ?knowledge is the key to success in the world.?

The National Chief Imam prayed for the President and people of Ghana. He also prayed for the continued peace and stability in the country.

On his part, the President?s representative touched on parent-child relationship and its importance in Islam. He commended parents especially mothers for the roles they play in the society.

He enjoined on parents to be patient with their children and to also pray for them at all times to grow to become responsible citizens.

Alhaji Baba Lamin also implored on the Muslim youth to be respectful and dutiful to their parents as well as to all leaders in the society, so as to be able to be successful in life.

Earlier on during the day, Alhaji Baba Lamin on behalf of the President presented six maxi bags of rice and unspecified amount of money to the organisers.

Other preachers at the function were imminent Muslim scholars such as Sheik Ustaz Awal, Sheik Tawfiq Jamal Baba, Alhaji Hassan Osman, Imam of Alajo North Mosque, Shiek Umar Bawa and the Chief of Faila Alhaji Yakubu.

Present at the function were the Chief of Dagomba community in the Greater Accra Region, Alhaji Abdul Kadr, an Iraqi representatives Sammaat Assayid Hashim and Sarhan AI-Awwad.
