The Early Childhood Education (ECD) program introduced by the Israeli Development Agency MASHAV and Ghana Education Services (GES) over 5 years ago to kindergartens in Kumasi has one many acclaim from education experts both local and international. The purpose of the training is to lead the selected teachers through creating a stimulating environment which fosters creativity and critical thinking skills among children.

The great success of the program in Kumasi has motivated the expansion of the program, first to the capital Accra and last year ? to the northern capital of Tamale.

This month, another round of training has taken place in both cities, with the two teams of Israeli ECD experts working simultaneously in both cities. The Tamale team leader is Ms. Janette Hirschmann, age 83, an extraordinary education expert that has been part of the project from its inception and has been leading the training on the ground for over 5 years now.

Joining the training team in Accra this time is Ms. Efrat Srebro, Director of the Musical kindergarten in Akko, an Israeli specialist who brings to Ghana unique educational techniques through a curriculum called ?Music That Counts?, which teaches young children to know, understand and love music, and develop learning skills such as literacy, numeracy and cognitive skills.

Opening the course in Accra, Mrs. Efrat Srebro ?Music is a language; it?s fun, and activates minds in a way that allows children to work with math and science,? Mrs. Srebro said. ?Music develops the brain. When children listen to music, they can picture things in their minds. It is a wonderful educational tool.?

Following the Ministry of Education and GES’s announcement of a 5 years scaling up of ECD in the country, this project is one of the leading examples of how education can be conducted on a nationwide level.? Israeli Ambassador Bar-li has already declared that Israel would be ready to assist with the process, and help create relevant programs to be used for the Teacher Training Colleges spread across the country.
