Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana Mr. Ebenezer Twum Asante recounted with fond memories the evolution of the global telecommunication giant since 1996 – Spacefon, Spacefon Areeba, Areeba, and now MTN.

“When our company began operations back in 1996, it was with a small staff of approximately 20, including 6 Ghanaians. Today we have approximately 1,919 employees. Out of this 685 are direct employees, 57 are contract employees and 1177 are third party contractors,” he said.

Mr. Asante did not leave out the excellent growth that the company has made over the past two decades.

“The strategic and consistent investments we make have of course, also contributed to our growth. Our total infrastructure investments from 2006 to date are over US$2.5 billion. This year we are investing $96 million in the network, made up of $62M in the traditional network, $16M in IT, and $18M LTE deployment,” he noted.

According to Mr. Asante apart from being the first to provide telecommunications coverage in all 10 regions of Ghana, first to launch electronic recharge and fixed mobile (FWAP), first to launch unit transfer, first to build an Ultra-Modern Switching and Data center, first indigenous African company to sponsor the FIFA World Cup in 2010 amongst others, MTN will be the first mobile operator too launch the 4G services in Ghana.

The theme for the celebration is “MTN @20; Two decades of brightening lives; embracing a future of unlimited opportunities.”
