MTN which recently chalked the 15 million subscriber milestone also took home the Best CSR Award for Sustainability, Environment & Social Impact.

The Ghana CSR Excellence Awards, in its fifth year, evolved from the Ghana CSR Diary & Awards launched in 2011 by the then Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Hanna Tetteh and the former President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Nana Owusu-Afari.

The Ghana CSR Excellence Awards remain Ghana’s only CSR-focused Award scheme concentrating mainly on how businesses respond to their internal and external stakeholders, environment and society at large. It is presided over by a multi-stakeholder jury with reputable representatives drawn from academia, business associations, regulatory agencies, civil society organizations and the media.

In Ghana MTN stands out as an institution focused on brightening the lives of communities in which it operates. Since its establishment in 2007, the MTN Ghana Foundation has funded and implemented 102 major projects and smaller initiatives in the areas of education, health and economic empowerment, and has thereby improved the lives of approximately three million people across the country.

Commenting on the award, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation said, “MTN Ghana Foundation will continue to invest in the lives of Ghanaians because we know it is important to make that difference. Today, more people in rural and urban communities have access to improved healthcare, thousands of expectant mothers can deliver in hospitals close to their communities and many lives have been saved as a result of critical medical equipment made available by the MTN Ghana Foundation.

“Children who used to sit in dangerous dilapidated structures now attend classes in comfortable, safe environments and tuition scholarships have sponsored the education of hundreds of needy children with inadequate sources of funding. The projects we fund are meant to help achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) whilst enhancing community livelihood,” she added. She further dedicated the awards to MTN stakeholders for partnering the Foundation to become the overall best CSR Company in Ghana.

In 2015, impactful projects undertaken by the MTN Ghana Foundation include the construction of a Neonatal facility in Tamale Teaching Hospital, capacity building for teachers in Math, English and Science, a Shea-butter production project to economically empower women in the Upper West region, and a fully furnished six-unit classroom block for the Asikasu community in the Eastern region.

Over the past eight years the MTN Ghana Foundation has invested GHc 21.5 million to brighten lives of thousands of communities across Ghana.
