The shortage of blood in Ghana has long been a critical issue, leading to the loss of thousands of lives, particularly in cases of road accidents and childbirth complications. In response to this pressing need, telecommunications giant MTN, with support from CalBank and the National Blood Bank, has stepped forward to donate 7,000 units of blood in an effort to save lives across the country.

This initiative, known as the *Save a Life Blood Donation Campaign*, has been a hallmark of MTN’s corporate social responsibility since 2011. Each year, on Valentine’s Day, the company organizes nationwide blood donation drives, symbolizing love and compassion for patients in dire need. Over the years, the campaign has contributed a total of 26,620 units of blood to hospitals and blood banks, significantly strengthening the country’s healthcare system.

The donations have supported major health institutions, including Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Government Hospital, Boggoso Government Hospital, Sefwi Wiaso Government Hospital, Ridge Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, and several regional blood banks. This year’s exercise in the Central Region saw an impressive turnout at three educational institutions: Academy of Christ the King Senior High School, Kwegyir Aggrey Senior High Technical School, and Winneba Nursing College.

Speaking to the media, Cynthia Mills, Economic Empowerment Advisor for the MTN Ghana Foundation, expressed her joy at the high level of participation from both staff and students. She emphasized the importance of voluntary blood donation, noting that “since there can never be life without blood, all qualified donors must contribute to saving lives, especially victims of road crashes and women in labour.” Mills expressed confidence that MTN would meet its target of 7,000 units from this year’s campaign.
