As part its efforts of empowering budding talents in the tech industry to help provide digital solutions to the everyday challenges facing societies; MTN Ghana has taken another judicious step by launching “MTN Apps Challenge Season 5.0 “.

MTN launched this laudable initiative in 2013 to nurture the ideas of local developers who build locally relevant mobile applications to help solve societal problems.

Speaking at the launching of MTN Apps Challenge Season 5.0 in Accra, the Chief Marketing Officer, MTN, Mr. Asher Khan, stated that MTN being the leading mobile telecommunications company in Ghana, they will ensure that Ghana becomes a leading apps developer in the tech industry.

According to him, the only way Ghana as a country can participate in the digital revolution is to develop their own local talent and local content. He said, this season they have introduced the best female project developer and the KatAppault initiative. However, the winners will awarded cash prizes and also support them to launch commercially viable Apps.

These additions are as a result of evaluation made of the previous versions that showed that the MTN APPS Challenge over the years has been male dominated and therefore the need to encourage female participation.

“The KatAppault initiative is a commercialization project which seeks to refine and commercialize winning ideas of MTN APPS challenge creators. This would be done in a four –thronged process of discovering the innovation, refining the business models while looking for early adopters, developing the innovation and commercializing the innovation.

Like the previous season, the project categories for innovator participation remain the same. They are the Internet of things (IoT), Mobile APPS and animated videos categories. Participant innovators can submit entries to these three categories as a university students, freelance or from Senior High School,” he explained.

In September 2015, version 3.0 called for entries for apps in the areas of Business, Sports, Games & Entertainment, and Lifestyle. Ninety –eight (98) entries, were received and 48 apps were submitted for the competition out of which 11 apps were awarded.

This he said, Season 4.0 saw over 100 participants. 23 selected participants went to the final. Amatsii, an app designed to make procurement of drugs simpler, faster, more transparent and easily traceable won the overall prize.

Other apps like “Pasco “and “Counters Ball Pro”, The Bird and Kite, “ , “AF Radio “ and “Smarter Gas” won various categories in Season 4.0.
According to him, MTN as company recognize the abundance of burgeoning app developers across the country and the challenge they face.

“We believe that given the right platform and opportunities our local App developers are bound to succeed beyond expectations, and this is one of the drivers of the MTN Apps Challenge,” he emphasized.

Mr. Asher Khan, therefore seized the opportunity to entreat Ghanaians especially, new developers and women to participate in this year’s Apps Challenge.
