Mampong (Ash), May 18, GNA – The former Member of Parliament for Asante-Mampong, Mr Peter Abum Sarkodie, has given strong indication about rescinding his decision to contest the constituency seat as an independent candidate in the coming December poll.
The change of heart followed interventions by some leading members
of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and added that that he would likely not be in the parliamentary race.
He denied any financial impropriety in the construction of the Ninting Junior High School (JHS) he initiated. The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) had initially provided GH¢5,000.00 towards the project.
Mr Sarkodie said given the delay that could have been caused to the
construction because of the way releases from the GETFund are done, he
applied for support from the Common Fund Administrator and this received approval.
Mr Sarkodie said the Common Fund Administration accepted to
finance the entire project and the expectation was that the GETFund
account with the Education Directorate should have been reimbursed with
the initial amount made available towards the implementation.
He said this was, however, not the case and it was this that had been
captured in an audit report as “double payment”  and that this should not be misconstrued as having made double payment to contractors who worked on the project.
