Marcelino dos Santos, a founding member of Mozambique’s ruling party Frelimo and a revolutionary in the struggle for the independence of Mozambique died on Tuesday in Maputo at the age of 90.

The information was advanced by the Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi from the province of Cabo Delgado during the session of the Council of Ministers.


“We lost our Frelimo icon, Comrade Marcelino dos Santos,” said Nyusi without revealing the cause of his death.

The president added that people like Marcelino dos Santos inspire Mozambicans all the time for their bravery in addressing the real problems of Mozambique.

Marcelino dos Santos served as Frelimo’s deputy president from 1969 to 1977. He was the Minister of Economic Planning and Development in the late 1970s and a Frelimo Political Bureau member in charge of the economy in the early
