The group abandoned villages in Ndande in the district of Moatize, in the northwestern Mozambican province of Tete, to the Malawian region of Mwanza.

According to Radio Mozambique, a delegation from Moatize led by its administrator, Elsa da Barca, visited the victims a few days ago in Mwanza, and found that they are living in an appalling condition.

Da Barca told them that there was no war in Mozambique, and the government was disarming the Renamo men. Therefore, she said, they should return home as soon as possible.

She said the district government will provide them the necessary logistics when they return home. The Mwanza authorities told da Barca that the return of the Mozambicans would ease pressure they face to look after them.

Clashes arose between government troops and the Renamo armed men in Moatize in August amid violation of an agreement signed between the main opposition and the government in September last year to halt hostilities between them. Both sides accuse each other of violating the accord.
