Over 70 children of Kitega Junior Primary School have been admitted to Kawolo Hospital after they were reportedly poisoned this morning.

The school is located in Kawolo sub-county, Buikwe district.

A substance suspected to be poisonous was mixed with the children’s porridge which they took this morning shortly after they had fetched water from a nearby spring.

The Buikwe district Police Commander Caroline Akoth says 2 school matrons have been arrested to help with the investigations.

Area residents earlier blocked the Kampala-Jinja Highway at Lugazi as they protested against the act, demanding that the matrons be lynched.

The police however fired teargas and dispersed the crowd. The situation has now returned to normal.

The admitted children are reported to be in poor condition.
