More than 4,000 girls were impregnated in eastern Zambia’s Lundazi district last year, raising questions about the country’s efforts to fight teenage pregnancies, health officials said on Wednesday.

Davy Zulu, District Health Director said the girls were below the age of 20 and some of them were schoolers.

He said a total of 4,124 adolescent girls accessed antenatal care services in 52 health facilities in the district between January and December 2018, according to state-run news agency, the Zambia News and Information Service.

The authorities, he said, will intensify sensitization programs on the danger of teenage pregnancies, adding that the program would involve all stakeholders.

The district also recorded 16 maternal deaths during the same period, showing a reduction from 27 deaths recorded the previous year. Enditem
