The Briton Farah finished third in his morning heat in 13 minutes 25.25 seconds for a place in Saturday’s final.

Farah won the 10,000m on Saturday and can now emulate Finland’s Lasse Viren who got back-to-back doubles 1972 and 1976. He has successive doubles at world championships (2013 and 2015) and is unbeaten in eight global races since getting 10,000m silver at the 2011 worlds.

Also qualified for the final is 41-year-old veteran Bernard Lagat of the US who got a 1,500m and 5,000m double at the 2007 worlds.

Set for later in the morning session under sunny skies was the men’s 3,000m steeplechase final and the women’s 800m heats with former world champion and season-leader Caster Semenya of South Africa.
