The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) has issued a nationwide appeal for unified support to revitalize the struggling Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine.
Following Heath Goldfields Ltd.’s recent payment of ₵80 million to settle a significant portion of legacy worker debts, the union urged government bodies, traditional leaders, and local communities to rally behind the new operator’s turnaround efforts.
According to the GMWU’s official statement, the ₵80 million payment represents a critical first step but underscores that reviving one of Ghana’s oldest mines requires broader collaboration.
Years of financial distress and operational challenges have plagued the facility, necessitating sustained intervention.
The union specifically called on the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist Heath Goldfields in clearing remaining arrears, stabilizing operations, and securing future investments.
The GMWU also appealed directly to traditional leaders and residents of Bogoso and Prestea, urging active partnership with the new management.
“The turnaround will benefit not just our members but the entire nation,” the statement emphasized, highlighting potential job security, local economic stimulation, and increased national revenue.
Union leadership reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with Heath Goldfields but stressed that success depends on collective action: “We need government, chiefs, residents, and every well-meaning Ghanaian to back this effort.”
