Microsoft will lay off approximately 9,000 employees globally, representing about 4% of its 228,000-person workforce, as part of its 2025 restructuring efforts.
According to the company’s announcement, the job cuts are intended to realign resources towards its aggressive artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. Specific departments affected were not officially confirmed, though reports indicate the Xbox gaming unit is impacted.
A Microsoft spokesperson stated the move positions the company for success in a dynamic marketplace. This marks the fourth round of layoffs in 2025, following 6,000 job cuts in May. Data from Washington state filings confirms over 800 positions will be eliminated in the company’s Redmond and Bellevue hubs.
The restructuring coincides with Microsoft committing $80 billion to build expansive data centers and infrastructure for AI model training and deployment. The company has significantly bolstered its AI leadership, hiring prominent British researcher Mustafa Suleyman to head its Microsoft AI division. Microsoft remains a major investor in OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, though industry reports suggest tensions exist as Microsoft promotes its own Copilot AI assistant against reported user preference for ChatGPT.
High demand for top AI talent persists across the sector despite core staff reductions. Tech rivals like Meta are reportedly offering signing bonuses exceeding $100 million to recruit AI engineers, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally involved in building Meta’s ‘superintelligence’ lab. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also acknowledged attempts to lure his team with high-value offers. Separately, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy indicated AI could replace some company job functions soon.
These layoffs reflect a broader Big Tech trend of consolidating operations while heavily investing to dominate the competitive AI landscape.
