Mental Health & Well-being Foundation, UHAS paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa

On Monday, 4th February 2019, The Mental Health anf Well-being Foundation, UHAS spearheaded by Mr. Abraham Norman Nortey, paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa.

A call which is necessitated by the Mental Health and Well-being Foundation executive’s desire to embark upon information and counselling outreaches throughout Senior High Schools on Mental Health Education in general, and ‘suicide’ in particular due to the increasing incidence of the phenomenon among young people many among whom are students.

While interviewing the Mental Health and Well-being Foundation, UHAS President, Mr Abraham Norman Nortey he did mention that in Ghana, there is absence of a national policy on suicide prevention is one of the greatest challenges, coupled with lack of political will and commitment to empower the Mental Health Authority and negligence of counseling and guidance centres in schools and communities.

The WHO (2012) also states that globally, for every person who completes a suicide 20 or more may attempt to end his or her life.

With this educational outreach to be embark in the Volta Region, it will reduce the spate of suicide which has already started in the year 2019 as recorded in University for Development Studies, in the life of a divorced woman and a 12years old class four student.
