SDLP policing spokesperson Conall McDevitt

(?January 05, 2013, UK, Refugee News Network )-SDLP?policing spokesperson?Conall?McDevitt has said it?s now time to end the charade perpetuated by political unionism and flag protest organisers that the protests have any legitimacy after police confirmed officers were fired upon in East Belfast following demonstrations on Saturday.

The South Belfast MLA said political unionism must now accept that illegal protests have no legitimacy and called on a strong response from the?PSNI against anybody organising illegal demonstrations.

He said: ?The?SDLP condemns the firing of live rounds at police officers in what can only be described as attempted murder. It?s now time to end the charade perpetuated by political unionism and protest organisers that these illegal protests have any legitimacy.

?Whatever grievance some people may have had it totally lost when they allow people to use these protests as cover for attempted murder.

?There is only one response possible ? and that?s a firm policing response against everyone involved in illegal protests and anyone seeking to organise or encourage illegal or violent demonstrations.

?Political unionism must now accept that these protests have no legitimacy and it?s now time for the people to unite against those seeking to use these illegal protests in order to drag violence back onto the streets before someone is killed or seriosuly injured.?
