The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije has celebrated his birthday distilling maggot infested drains at London Market in Accra.

The Mayor, whose birthday falls on November 4th, paid a visit to the community as part of the celebration when he surprisingly discovered that the lives of residents and traders are in great danger as a result of the serious stench that emanates from the chocked gutters of the area.

This situation, residents lamented, was as a result of the attitude of some unscrupulous residents at Bokom, Akoto Lantey, Gbese and Salaga who converted the gutters into their dump sites, a situation which according to them if stringent measures are not taken to stop it, it will degenerate into serious communicable diseases particularly cholera.

The Mayor who was very passionate about the health of the residents called for periodic clean up exercise and dissilting of the chocked gutters in the community which begun yesterday.

Dr. Vanderpuije blamed the Director of the Environmental Health Directorate of the AMA Dr. Simpson Anim Boateng for doing due diligence and his inability to put administrative measures to ensure effective monitoring of waste disposal in the Accra Metropolis.

DSC_0051In an interview some of the angered residents, they blamed the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio Constituency Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuije for not providing lasting solutions for environmental sanitation in the area.

According to them, they have approached the MP on several occasions to give them designated dumpsites but all appeals fell on deaf ears.

However, when journalists reached the MPs?s Special Assistant Nii Tackie over the concern raised by the residents, he denied, saying that last week the MP had organized a clean-up exercise to clean the gutters.

He pointed out that the situation should not be blamed on stakeholders in the area but residents at Bokom, Akoto Lantey, Gbese and Salaga market all within the Ga Mashie areas, who on constantly dump refuse in the gutters.

As part of his birthday celebration, the Greater Accra Markets Women Association have sung for the Mayor and presented assorted items including Milo drinks and biscuits to him for his birthday.
