WASHINGTON — The White House said Tuesday that U.S. President Barack Obama will visit Hiroshima later this month, the first by a sitting American president.
Calling the visit to Hiroshima “historic,” the White House said in a statement that Obama’s trip will highlight his “continued commitment to pursuing the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” (U.S.-Japan-Visit)

UNITED NATIONS — One hundred and ten countries have confirmed their attendance at the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit on May 23-24 in Istanbul, Turkey, said the summit spokesperson.
Following discussions with respective member states, Herve Verhoosel, the summit’s spokesperson, was able to confirm officially the participation of Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, and Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, whose country holds the six-month presidency of the European Union. RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s Senate leader Renan Calheiros said on Monday the Senate will vote as scheduled on a motion to open an impeachment trial against President Dilma Rousseff, despite a sudden lower house about-face.
The lower house reversal, announced just two days before the Senate is to vote on Wednesday, “is an untimely decision,” said Calheiros, and as such “cannot be accepted.” (Brazil-Rousseff-Impeachment)

JALALABAD, Afghanistan — At least two persons were killed and five others wounded in a suicide car bomb in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar on Tuesday, an official said.
“The blast took place in the afternoon after the bomber detonated his explosive-packed vehicle near the house of a pro-government leader in Nazyan district. The explosion caused a member of local uprising group dead along the bomber and injured five others,” the official told Xinhua anonymously. (Afghanistan-Attack)

ANKARA — At least 15 people were wounded on Tuesday in southeastern Diyarbakir province of Turkey after an explosion targeting a police vehicle, local NTV broadcaster reported.
