The mayor of the Accra, Mr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye, has hinted that, traders whose items and property got burnt during last Sunday?s fire outbreak at the Kantamanto Market will be assisted with soft loans from Micro-Finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).

Mr. Vanderpuye also indicated that, he has directed the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), to inspect the scene for contractors to clear it for reconstruction of the Kantamanto Market into a modern market place.

Speaking to journalists a news conference yesterday, the Accra mayor disclosed that, registration is on-going to know the number of traders who were affected by the fire out-break for a loan officer to work with.

Last Sunday morning, the Kantamanto Market in the Accra Central Business District, was thrown into a state of mourning, when fire gutted large portion of the market, destroying propert worth several thousands of Ghana cedis.

Even though the cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained, information gathered indicated that the fire started in one of the second-hand clothing shops behind the Ghana Commercial Bank (GBC) building, which subsequently spread to other wooden structures, consuming the entire market.

He said, Nima and Mamobi Markets in the Greater Accra Region, respectively have seen massive positive change in infrastructure.

?We have engaged investors to reconstruct our markets with modern facilities and we will not allow and tolerate anything or anybody who will stand on our way in modernizing it. I hope we have learned something from this incident?, he added.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister Mr. Julius Debrah, also pleaded with the market women to co-operate with the government in moderating the market.

The Vice President, Mr. Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, who visited the scene on Sunday, expressed worry over the huge loss, saying, ?this is another disaster that should never have happened?.?He appealed to the Ministry of Finance as well as other financial institutions to come to the aid of the victims with soft loans.

The 2012 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo- Addo also visited the scene to console the affected victims.

He expressed his deepest sympathy to the victims, saying it was a very sad day in the history of Ghana and charged the relevant authorities to put in place the necessary measures to forestall the recurrence of such disasters.

?There have been too many fire outbreaks in our markets lately, and it is high time we took serious steps to bring the situation under control.

I am making a passionate appeal to the relevant authorities, especially, the Institutes of Engineers, Architects and Planners to come out with innovative plans for the construction of modern prototype market that will make it difficult of these fires?, Nana Addo concluded.
