Winston Reid won it for West Ham in a pulsating match – their last at Upton Park before they move to the Olympic Stadium next season.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic was in tears at the final whistle, embracing his players after a breathless 90 minutes.

“It was a special game,” said Bilic. “Big pressure for us – although we’ve had a great year, we didn’t want to lose our last game here. We wanted to win.

“It was a win for character. We didn’t stop believing. We were unlucky to be 1-1, we should have been more than 1-up at half-time, but this is why we didn’t stop believing. We totally deserved it. It was a great night for history.”

The match was delayed for 45 minutes after Manchester United’s team bus was pelted with bottles by fans outside Upton Park.

Diafra Sakho’s opener for West Ham was cancelled out and then bettered by two Anthony Martial goals but Antonio equalized and Reid headed the winner nine minutes from time.

The result means United stay fifth, two points behind Manchester City, while West Ham are just one point further back in sixth.

“I think it was written in the stars tonight, three fantastic goals and just pure determination and just the will not to lose,” West Ham midfielder Mark Noble said.

“I’m so proud of the players tonight, they were phenomenal. We’ve just got that spirit. In years gone by we would have lost that game.”

Reid said the noise inside the stadium helped to drive on the players when they were 2-1 down.

“It was just meant to be, one of those evenings for the whole club,” he said.

“To finish with a victory over a magnificent team like Manchester United is brilliant for us.”
