Malcolm and Lifebuoy launched handwashing campaign

The Melcom Care Foundation, the charity wing of the Melcom Group in collaboration with Lifebuoy?over the weekend launched a month long handwashing campaign as part of efforts to promote personal hygiene.

The campaign, which seeks to promote proper washing of hands using soap and clean water is in response to the recent high incidence of cholera in the country and the Ebola virus disease scare that has gripped the entire West African sub-region.

The campaign would be carried out every Saturday at one of Melcom’s outlet shops for four weeks, to be climax at the Melcom Plus Shop on Saturday, September 20, during which members of the public who would part take in the handwashing demonstration exercises would be given crates of Lifebouy soaps.

Speaking at the launch in Accra, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, Melcom Group Director of Communications, said over the years emphasizes has been placed on the nation’s infrastructural development, however, the maintenance of the health of the human resources which drives these infrastructures is very critical to the nation?s socio-economic development.

He said research has shown that proper washing of hands with soaps and the use of hand sanitizers play important roles in preventing the spread of communicable diseases like cholera, which is killing a lot of people and overcrowding hospitals.

Mr Avenorgbo said longevity of human life could be promoted through means such as personal hygiene and regular body exercise.

The Director observed that lifebuoy is a very powerful antiseptic soap with 99 per cent efficacy against germs of all kinds.
