The Department of Immigration under Malawi’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Tuesday intercepted 66 Ethiopian nationals who had attempted to enter the country illegally.
The immigrants were nabbed in the mountains surrounding Phwezi, a location in the country’s Northern Region district of Rumphi.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Department in the country’s Northern Region, Francis Chitambuli, explained that the illegal immigrants were apprehended following a tip the Immigration Department officials had received from residents surrounding the location where the culprits were hiding.
Chitambuli explained: “We had rushed to the mountains where we found the 66 Ethiopians hiding and we nabbed them.”
He further explained that the 66 Ethiopians would later be taken to court to answer charges of illegal entry into the country which is contrary to Section 21 (1) of the Malawi Immigration Act.
Meanwhile, the immigrants, who are all male, are being kept on remand at Mzuzu Prison in the country’s Northern Region city of Mzuzu. Enditem
