Fire gutted office of the Malawi Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, George Chaponda, and surrounding offices Tuesday morning destroying all office property in that government building’s wing.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started after a lightning strike and many believe there was a spark that grew into the raging fire.
“There was a smell of something burning and one woman went to the minister’s office to check and she found that fire had started from a power socket where a cable ran to a plasma TV set,” one employee told journalists.
“She backed off to alert other employees but by the time people mobilized the fire had run out of hand,” said the employee.
When fire fighters arrived at the scene, the entire wing which housed Chaponda’s office had been consumed by the fire with flames licking out through the windows.
However, the fire fighters managed to put the fire under control after two hours.
