Mozambique’s main opposition party Renamo denied on Monday in Maputo that it has any responsibility for the recent attacks targeting police agents and civilians in the central region of the country, specifically in the provinces of Manica and Sofala.

“Renamo party distances itself from these acts and we reiterate that Renamo has nothing to do with the attacks,” said spokesperson of Renamo Jose Manteiga in a press conference.

Manteiga said the members of his party in the central region are calmly waiting for the ongoing process of demilitarization, disarming and reintegration.

The police in its last press briefing confirming attacks in the central region said there were 5 victims, two of them were police agents and three others civilians, who were attacked by men wearing green uniforms, indicating that they were from Renamo.

According to Mozambique’s largest newspaper Noticias’ report last Firday, the self-proclaimed leader of the military junta split from Renamo, Mariano Nhongo, claimed responsibility of the attacks as retaliation to what it calls fraud elections held in October 15. Enditem
