Madagascar’s Environment National Agency (ONE) issued 674 environmental authorizations since its creation in 1997, the CEO of the ONE Jean Chrysostome Rakotoary said on Thursday in a press briefing.

“The ONE issued 674 environmental authorizations, including 107 compliance certificates for compliance folders and 567 permits,” Jean Chrysostome Rakotoary said.

70 percent of measures written in the environmental specifications are met by permits owners, said the ONE which checked periodically the respect of environmental specifications of projects once promoters of projects receive their environmental permits.

Six licenses were suspended so that they take compliance measures following an environmental assessment of the projects, Jean Chrysostome Rakotoary said, adding that “30 percent of the projects have a delay in the implementation of an environmental officer”.

According to the law in Madagascar, projects concerning tourism, water, infrastructure, biodiversity protection, telecommunication, waste, farming and mining, should have environmental authorization before running.

The ONE said that Madagascar celebrates this year the 20th years of a decree on the Implementation Compatibility of Investments with the Environment (MECIE), which is the legal instrument in the country requiring public or private investors to undertake an environment impact assessment. Enditem
