Luol Deng in Ghana (5)

The Ghana Basketball Federation (GBBA) has received  a delegation of basketball players and executives from the NBA for a 5-day visit to support the growth of basketball in Ghana.  Among the delegation is the captain of the Great Britain Basketball team, two-time NBA All-Star and Chicago Bulls small forward Luol Deng, Great Britain power forward and former NBA player  Pops Mensah-Bonsu ,  NBA Senior Director, NBA Africa ? John Manyo-Plange, and NBA Vice President for Development ? Africa, Amadou Gallo Fall.

Working with the Ghana Basketball Association, Luol and Pops will engage with youth at school basketball clinics in selected cities to see some of the up-and-coming young talent. In an interview with Luol Deng, he revealed that he was excited about Ghana hosting him and he expressed hope of impacting on Ghanaians the need to advance the sport of basketball in Ghana.

He said: ?We did this last year in different countries in Africa and what we do is that, for 4 days we will promote basketball and teach young kids how to play basketball; teach them some fundamental drills. We will also interact with some coaches and teach them how to coach these kids for the future and hopefully leave an impact strong enough for the coaches, kids and the country ? to pursue basketball and make it bigger; and pay attention to it more than it is now.?

He added that although football may be the main sport in Ghana, it is important to explore the potentials of other sports such as basketball.  He explained:?The first thing to start with is to bring more attention to the sport and let people know that there is potential. A lot of the times when we go to countries where football is the main sport, a lot of people seem to think that basketball is not possible, and we try to come in to say that in Africa we are capable of a lot of things. And the more sports you put out there, or the more activities for the kids, the better it is for them to find where their skills lie. Not every kid will make it in football and not every kid will make it in basketball. As a young kid, I had options where I played football,  basketball and other sports and I realized what sports I excelled in. And I was able to pursue it and continue with basketball.?

The former Sudanese refugee, who runs a foundation based in London,  continues to support the development of basketball back home in Sudan.  The Luol Deng Foundation is dedicated to assisting those in need by providing resources and creating opportunities for a better way of life. With hope, integrity and faith as values, the foundation?s wellness, educational and recreational programs encourage and promote progress and improvement in the community of South Sudan
