A number of players have been left out of Liverpool?s squad to face Hearts in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has chosen to leave behind captain Steven Gerrard, last season?s top scorer Luis Suarez and defenders Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel for the trip to Edinburgh.

He admits Sunday?s game against Manchester City at Anfield remains a priority having witnessed his side lose their opening Premier League game of the season 3-0 at West Brom ? their worst start to a League season in 75 years.

Rodgers said: ?We?ve got a very small squad so I?ve got to try and protect some of the players.

?We played for over half an hour with ten men on Saturday (after Daniel Agger?s red card) and obviously we?ve got a massive game at the weekend.

?But I trust my players and I trust the group and whatever group or  team I put out will always be to win the game so I?m looking forward to it.

Hearts could hand a debut to former Aston Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman, with Jamie MacDonald a doubt after his partner went into labour.
