One South African child died and 12 others were injured on Wednesday in Johannesburg when they were struck by lightning while playing soccer.

“A group of children under-14 soccer league were playing on an informal soccer field when a lightning strike brought the game to an abrupt and tragic end,” ER24 Emergency Medical Services said in a statement.

“One child remained motionless on the field after the incident and was unfortunately later declared dead at the scene,” the statement said.

There were 12 children who sustained injuries from third-degree burns to muscle stiffness, it said.

All the injured were attended to and taken to the nearby health facility, it added. Enditem
